In an article dated September 12, 2014, the New York Times addressed one of the many custody and visitation problems facing same-sex couples. The article, titled “Parenthood Denied by the Law-After a Same-Sex Couple’s Breakup, a Custody Battle” explores the custody struggles of a Nassau County lesbian couple after they broke up.

The article briefly mentions that this situation could have been avoided if the parties had completed a same-sex adoption in which the non-birth parent legally adopts the child and creates equal parenting rights between the two parties.  This issue of adoption is of the utmost importance to same-sex couples and, unfortunately, it is often a possibility that the couples fair to explore.
