Indiana Passes New Law Terminating Child Support at Age 19

The state of Indiana has recently passed a bill that drastically alters the length of a child support obligation. Generally, child support terminates when a child reaches the age of emancipation (sometimes known as the age of majority). Prior to the passage of the new bill, Indiana, like New York, set the age of emancipation at 21 years old. The new bill states that child support shall terminate when the child reaches age 19 although there are situations where it may be extended.

Indiana has now joined the majority of states that have an age of emancipation of either 18 or 19 years old.
