Cohalan Courthouse, located at 400 Carleton Avenue, Central Islip, New York.

The Family Court deals with a variety of cases, including matters ranging from child custody and visitation disputes to child and spousal support, domestic violence, and neglect cases.

The Suffolk County Family Court building in Central Islip is staffed by three types of judicial officers:

  1. Family Court Judges: These judges preside over a wide range of family-related cases, including child custody and visitation, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, adoption, and other matters pertaining to families and children.
  2. Support Magistrates: Support magistrates are responsible, primarily for handling child and spousal support matters as well as paternity issues. They conduct hearings, review evidence, and make determinations regarding the amount of support payments.
  3. Court-Attorney Referees: Court Attorney Referees are judicial officers empowered to hear specific Family Court cases including child custody, visitation and Orders of Protection.
